The refrigerant transition is reshaping component design

The move away from high-GWP refrigerants toward options like R32, R454B and R290 isn't just a compressor and controls issue — it changes the tubing and component side of the bill of materials too. Lower-GWP refrigerants often run at different operating pressures than the R410A-based systems they're replacing, which means wall thickness and burst-pressure margins on copper tube and coil assemblies need re-checking rather than assumed to carry over unchanged.

For manufacturers running multiple refrigerant platforms in parallel during the transition, this often means qualifying two versions of what used to be a single tube or coil part number. Component suppliers who can support that kind of parallel qualification — rather than treating every refrigerant change as a fresh sourcing project — are becoming more valuable partners than pure low-cost suppliers.

OEM lead times are getting tighter, not longer

Original equipment manufacturers are under pressure to compress their own production lead times in response to seasonal demand spikes and shorter installation windows. That pressure flows upstream. A component supplier that quotes a six-week lead time on a standard coil is at a real disadvantage against one that can consistently deliver in three, even at a modest price premium.

This is pushing more OEMs toward suppliers who hold safety stock on high-rotation SKUs, or who can commit to a rolling forecast arrangement rather than pure purchase-order-to-purchase-order buying. It's a shift from transactional sourcing toward something closer to a supply partnership, particularly for components that sit on the critical path of final assembly.

Sourcing footprints are diversifying

Manufacturers who concentrated sourcing in a single country or region over the last decade are actively building a second or third qualified supplier in a different geography. This isn't necessarily about cost — it's about resilience against shipping disruption, tariff changes and single-source risk. India has picked up a meaningful share of this diversification for copper tube and precision component manufacturing, on the back of established manufacturing capability and competitive labour and energy costs relative to some alternatives.

For a buyer running this kind of dual-sourcing strategy, the practical challenge is qualifying a second supplier to the same tolerance and documentation standard as the incumbent, without duplicating the entire qualification process from scratch. Suppliers who can align their quality documentation format with what a buyer's existing supplier already provides make that transition considerably faster.

Efficiency standards keep tightening

Minimum energy performance standards for split and central air conditioning systems continue to tighten across most major markets, and each round of tightening puts more pressure on heat exchanger and coil design to extract more capacity from a similar or smaller footprint. That usually means finer fin spacing, more compact coil geometry, and tighter tolerance on tube-to-fin fit — all of which raise the bar for component manufacturing precision.

It also increases the value of a component supplier who can work directly from OEM drawings and adjust tube diameter, wall thickness or coil geometry to match a specific design revision, rather than only offering a fixed catalogue of standard sizes.

VRF and multi-split systems keep growing their share

Variable refrigerant flow and multi-split systems continue to take share from single-split installations in commercial and higher-end residential projects, driven by their flexibility and zoning capability. These systems place different demands on tubing than simple split systems — longer straight runs with consistent wall thickness, tighter joint quality at branch fittings, and more rigorous leak testing given the larger total refrigerant charge and piping length involved.

For component suppliers, this trend rewards investment in longer straight-length hard-drawn tube production and more rigorous in-line leak testing, rather than only optimizing for high-volume coiled tube for simpler residential split systems.
