Where copper shows up in an HVAC system

Walk through any split AC, ductable unit or chiller and copper tube is doing several jobs at once: carrying refrigerant between the compressor, condenser and evaporator, forming the finned coils that transfer heat, and connecting the indoor and outdoor units through the interconnecting piping run. It's rarely a single part — it's a family of tube sizes and wall thicknesses selected for the pressure and heat-transfer demands of each stage.

The properties that matter

Three things keep copper ahead of the alternatives in this application. Thermal conductivity is far higher than steel and meaningfully higher than aluminium, so coils need less surface area to move the same amount of heat. Copper is also easy to bend, flare and braze into tight coil geometries without cracking, which matters when a coil has to fit inside a compact outdoor unit. And it resists corrosion from both refrigerant and ordinary atmospheric moisture far better than uncoated steel, which is why copper coils routinely outlast the equipment around them.

ACR tube vs plumbing-grade copper

Not all copper tube is interchangeable. HVAC and refrigeration use ACR (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration) tube — internally cleaned, capped and often nitrogen-purged during manufacturing to keep the bore free of oxide and moisture before it ever reaches a brazing torch. Ordinary plumbing copper isn't held to the same internal cleanliness standard, and using it in a sealed refrigerant circuit risks introducing contaminants that shorten compressor life.

What to check when specifying tube

For OEMs and panel builders, the practical checklist is: confirm temper (soft/annealed for coiled tube used in coils and interconnecting lines, hard-drawn for straight lengths), confirm wall thickness against the system's working pressure, and confirm the tube is genuinely ACR-grade with mill test certificates, not just visually similar copper. Getting this right at the sourcing stage avoids problems that are expensive to trace back once a unit is in the field.
